"Mercado Central" Mercado Central has a new and colorful facade on the corner of Lake Street and Bloomington in Powderhorn neighborhood. Founded by Juan Linares, Ramon Leon, and Sal Miranda with the intent to foster business development for Latinos in Minneapolis, it has 35 thriving businesses and is now "a national model of community economic development," according to the website. The planning began in 1992, with the first goal being economic progress. They asserted that "Latinos should take ownership and responsibilities related to their own growth and in a disciplined manner ... and they also needed to build their capacity in order to prove that they are a contribution to their adopted country." The doors opened in 1997, and Mercado Central continues to make a vital contribution to the Southside. Visit the shops and attend events to support the Latino community.
