"A New Year's Eve tradition" Pastor Dāgs Demandts gives a blessing to church members during a New Year's Eve service at the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Minneapolis-St. Paul. The church is a longtime landmark of the Powderhorn Park neighborhood and is the only Latvian Lutheran Church in the state with members from as far away as Chicago.
"Portal to Play" My young assistant accompanied me to three of Powderhorn Park's playgrounds as I searched for action, adventure, and photo ops, but we were surprised to find no other kids out enjoying the sunshine at that time. The sledding hills are melted and the ice isn't thick enough to skate on, so it felt more like a fall day as we tromped around without hats and gloves in the mid-40s.
"Calling All Voices: Community Sing" Whitney Bembenek (pictured third from right) leads Calling All Voices: a group of community members in singing together in the Powderhorn Park building. This group of neighbors, friends, and several new to the group filled the space with warmth, creativity and bright energy. Whitney leads these singing groups, as well as other community oriented singing events in the neighborhood and all are welcome.
"Community Forum Connections" Roberto de la Riva, Angela Conley, and Tabitha Montgomery were among the attendees connecting about community and positive pressure to protest at Saturday's Powderhorn Community Forum. Roberto led the conversation as the whole group explored what protest means, what it accomplishes, and more.
"Community Involvement Needed" Developers' plans for this corner on Chicago and Lake have not included input from neighbors, businesses, or Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association, according to the Executive Director Tabitha Montgomery. Inadequate notice is one issue she cites in her article on the front page of the December 2018 issue of Southside Pride. She calls for community action to challenge the process that allows the City Planning Commission to ignore community concerns before the final decision is made. " Man in the mural" Antonio Riveria was waiting on his lunch order in the main dining area of Mercado Central when he agreed to a portrait in front of a section of Pablo Kalaka's mural Todos Vuelven, which means "Everybody returns." The mural was completed by Kalaka over the summer and completely transformed the exterior of the corner building. Riveria is in front of the only section that is inside the Mercado.
