“Literary Trivia" A hand painted building sign is all that remains of a major part of retail history on Lake and Chicago. Nathan Roberts bought Minneapolis Shoe Store in 1937 after its previous owners went bankrupt during the Great Depression, and changed the name of the business to Robert’s Shoe Store. The store remained open for a total of 77 years and will be forever missed by local residents. A morsel of local history that people may not know is that in 1971 Robert Pirsig wrote the acclaimed “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” while working as a technical writer at Century Publications, located on the second floor of this building. The owner Stuart Cohen, allowed Pirsig to use his business office to write from 2 to 6 am before regular work hours. When the book was finished, Stuart helped Pirsig prepare the manuscript, pulling each carbon copy one typed page at a time. Stuart has fond memories of the floor being buried with sheets of paper and their hands black from the ink.
"Island Solitude" A Grey Heron sought solitude on the island in Powderhorn Lake. It proceeded to fly back and forth between the island and the northeast shore.
