"Long Shadows" In this first week of January we have already seen some extreme cold temperatures, and I wanted to capture the cold as well as some of the crisp beauty of the day. Running down the snowy hills of Powderhorn Park through the wind, I walked out onto the frozen lake and noticed that the midday sun was casting long shadows of the trees behind me. This photo captures those cold midday shadows on a textured and icy Powderhorn Lake, also showing a view of Powderhorn's small tree-lined island.
"Sauerkraut" Over a month ago, we chopped cabbage, put it in a bucket, pounded it to compress it, added water and salt, put a plate with weights to keep it pretty airtight, and then let it ferment until today. Lucinda Anderson led our crew. Liza Lawrence, Chris Ellis, and I learned the whole process. The result was we divided three gallons of kraut into jars. (Pictured are Lucinda, left, and Liza, right.)
"Winter Birds' Food Court" At first approach, this tree looked like it had many little branchy knobs. But then, as we got closer, they startled, and flew away! We waited, and eventually, the birds came back, and we were able to get this shot. The tree is near an abundance of bird feeders, which makes it an excellent place for this flock to hang out.
