"Community Bath" Backyards in Powderhorn are aflutter with activity. Squirrels are ravenously hunting for anything edible; adults are raking leaves for children to jump into; and birds are taking advantage of the last days of unfrozen bird baths available to them. I watched as a flock of year-old Cedar Waxwings (you can tell their age because they do not have the tell-tale red on their wings) and a flock of house sparrows shared this bathing space with one another. A juvenile Cardinal came and splashed around with them, too. OK, I spent a couple of hours watching about a dozen species of birds in the early afternoon. We have an amazing variety of birds in Minneapolis.
"Recycling Day" Patrick has been on the job for about a year. Prior to being a Recycling Man, he worked on a crew picking up yard waste for part of the year. He let go of his gym membership because of the good cardio and exercise he gets on the job. He says he really appreciates it when people sort all the categories of recyclables cleanly and, luckily, we get a gold star:)
"Words for politicians to take to heart" The pumpkins in the window box drew my attention to this house, and then I noticed the sign with a quote from Paul Wellstone. In our present political climate, rational thinking and calmer dialogue would help us address the real needs of our communities and the world rather than negative messages of fear, suspicion, and hate.
