"Wood Duck Boxes" Powderhorn Park is a popular site for wood ducks in the city. Wood ducks commonly nest in tree cavities near water. As tree cavities have become scarce wood duck boxes have been put up to encourage nesting in the area. Every year, as spring approaches, the boxes are filled with fresh wood chips in hope that the female wood duck will nest and produce offspring. After hatching, the ducklings will jump down from the nest and make their way towards the water. Look for these colorful birds come spring!
"Mildred F. Miller" In Mildred Miller's home are memory boards from a recent event. Last Saturday at the Powderhorn Park Community Building, about 100 family and friends celebrated her 90th birthday (2/15). She has lived in this neighborhood for 60 years, raised four children (two live nearby in Powderhorn), and actively worked for peace and justice in groups like WAMM (Women Against Military Madness). A published poet (A World Split Open) and a past participant in Powderhorn Writers Festival, Mildred has a deep history to share with us. A beacon of light and warmth, she is loved by many, including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
