"The Nordskog Family" he University of Minnesota Press has just released The Opposite of Cold: The Northwoods Finnish Sauna Tradition, written by former Powderhorn resident Michael Nordskog, with photography by Aaron W. Hautula, foreword by David Salmela, and introduction by Arnold R. Alanen. I watched this evolve from a magazine article into a book rich with history and information about saunas. Mike is a great researcher and writer. Add to that the exquisite photographs by Aaron and a well-designed book, and you have a treasure to read and view. Mike and Genie have been guests in our home in Powderhorn neighborhood over the years, and Chris and I have welcomed their children into our lives from the day they were born (left to right: Jasper, Kaia, and Cole). We were lucky to purchase a home that already has a sauna in the basement, and we’ve spent many nights trying to warm the chill out of our bones in the winter. We have also enjoyed the wood-fired sauna at Mike’s family cabin up north, and that building is featured on the cover of the book. The American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis hosted a reception for the book tonight (9/30/10), followed by a presentation by Mike and Aaron. They kicked off their publication release this morning with an appearance on Channel 11's Showcase Minnesota. They will be touring bookstores around the Midwest. See www.theoppositeofcold.com.
