"The Pie-nal Four" River, Byrd, Sam and Jeff host the third annual Pie-nal Four* pie contest at their Powderhorn home. This year's contestants are a Lattice Top Deep Dish Sour Cherry Pie, a Maple Cream Pie, a Pecan Maple Pie with Kumquat and Bourbon, and a Triple Layer Pumpkin Chocolate Pie. I voted for the Maple Cream Pie. No one ever said that photographing events in the neighborhood was easy. * It starts with 64 pie suggestions, narrowed down to 32, narrowed still further to the Sweet Sixteen, then the Elite Eight, and lastly....the Pie-nal Four. edited to add: The winner of the 2009 Pie Competition was the Pecan Maple Pie with Kumquat and Bourbon.
"Division of Indian Work" Before Europeans came to America, Powderhorn Park and most of the southern half of Minnesota was populated by the Dakota Peoples. Powderhorn Park is still home to many native people and the Division of Indian Work on 10th Ave S and Lake Street. From their website at http://diw.gmcc.org/ Since 1952, the Division of Indian Work (DIW) has empowered American Indian people through culturally based advocacy, education, counseling and leadership development. DIW operates: An Indian parenting program Reduced-rent apartments for young parents who cannot find affordable housing A family violence counseling program A food shelf that also offers nutrition classes A youth mentoring and tutoring program with a teen pregnancy prevention component A loving home for American Indian foster children * A recovery program to help American Indians who have completed chemical dependency treatment but who need help maintaining their sobriety A Sioux (Dakota) Prayer that seems appropriate to the day from http://www.firstpeople.us/html/A-Sioux-Prayer.html Oh, Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the winds Whose breath gives life to the world, hear me I come to you as one of your many children I am small and weak I need your strength and wisdom May I walk in beauty Make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset. Make my hands respect the things you have made And my ears sharp to your voice. Make me wise so that I may know the things you have taught your children. The lessons you have written in every leaf and rock Make me strong--------! Not to be superior to my brothers, but to fight my greatest enemy....myself Make me ever ready to come to you with straight eyes, So that when life fades as the fading sunset, May my spirit come to you without shame.
