There is definitely no shortage of funky front entrances around Powderhorn. Back in 2010 my front porch was featured on the Powderhorn365 blog. I was so touched. It was then that I vowed to become a volunteer photographer some year. Inspiration abounds in every direction.
Jessica opened the doors of MN NAF Salon at 3749 Bloomington Ave. in May of this year. Her hair salon/gallery is free-form yet grounded. She recycles everything she can, including composting and uses organic products. Jessica enjoys painting, sculpting, weaving, yoga, music—all art forms that are a logical connection to hair styling. Jessica’s business and spiritual philosophy seem interchangeable. I asked what she likes most about Powderhorn and she said, “For its weirdness—no fear to be creative.”
For the last 17 years there has been a Féile Bríd and Imbolc Celebration in Powderhorn. Organized by the Tree and the Well, people gather to honor the season and the goddess and saint Brigid. There was a beautiful snow labyrinth, richly-woven song, a luminous fire performance, and a community spiral dance.
"Favorite face in fire-light"
Daylight saving's time ending meant it got dark an hour earlier this 1st evening in November. Having a fire in the back yard cast a glowing light on daughter Melissa while we enjoyed the company of friends at the end of another day in Powderhorn.
"Sam's Market & Meats"
You might miss this Powderhorn gem if you keep to the main streets of our neighborhood. Set a block off Bloomington, this little convenience store offers many ethnic foods in addition to candy & ice cream.
“Chicago Lake Liquors” - for its first 13 years the business was located at the corner of Chicago and Franklin. In the early 80’s their TV ads featured Jesse “The Body” Ventura, a professional wrestler with a bombastic persona.
"Streetlight, night, with rain" Today was gloomy throughout , so I thought I'd try catching an image of the rain itself. This lamp in Powderhorn Park illuminates the rain for me, especially the steady dripping off its hood. It's a surprise for me to see the light's strobing effect, which produces some strange, squiggly droplets beside the filament. I've never caught those before.
“Holiday on Cedar” This shows one of the newest businesses in Powderhorn Neighborhood. In a few hours, the gas station will open for the day and become one of the most bustling centers in the community.
I had the opportunity to visit La Ceiba Bistro, the new Powderhorn Caribbean Restaurant, this week. Not only was the food delicious but I loved the restaurant's ambiance. Racing the storm clouds, I went back Saturday night to capture La Ceiba's beautiful exterior colors.
Minneapolis winters are never too cold for patrons at Matt's Bar & Grill. Saturday night was no different with a line stretching out the door. These customers were all waiting for one thing, Matt's "Jucy Lucy". Established in the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood in 1954, the Minneapolis landmark claims the title of original (and best) "Jucy Lucy". Even Obama had to check out what all the hype was about at Matt's during his visit to Minneapolis this summer.
I met Ebbin Martin when I bought his 700c bike tires through a listing on the Facebook page "Twincities Bicycle Trading Post," which he helped create and moderates.
Ebbin is heavily involved in the cycling community. He loves to ride in all seasons and particularly enjoys Powderhorn 24. Per his request, Ebbin is portrayed in this photo "riding a bike, as opposed to having bikes."
