"A Christmas Visit" Maija and her children Asha and Aksel wave 'bye after a fun visit to their house in Powderhorn just before Christmas. Husband/dad David is still in the kitchen peeling potatoes for the home-made lefse. The kids put special ornaments on the tree, which shows invitingly through the open door. Warmth and light convey "Merry Christmas" best of all.
Christmas pageant practice at the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Minneapolis and St. Paul at 32rd and 17th. I've ridden past this church a zillion times and never knew it is a center of Latvian culture in the US. Besides the church, the building houses the Latvian School where children learn Latvian culture - language, song, and folk dance. Latvian immigrants bought the building from the original Norwegian Lutheran congregation in 1951, and it's been home to four generations of families with Latvian heritage.
I had wonderful conversations with Janis, one of the teachers and
father to some of the kids in the pageant, and Mara, a parent and
documentary filmmaker. Janis' parents brought their family to the US
after World War II, and he grew up coming to this church.
"TBT" This is as close to a "Throw-Back Thursday" photo as I'll be able to get for this project since it has to be a photo from the current day. These fine Powderhorn scholars are going old-school (for real...they are on their way to a field trip at an old schoolhouse) and got all dressed up for the outing. These are their serious expressions, since in most turn-of-the-century photos there's not a lot of smiling. From left to right: Josie, Maizie, Iris, Erik, and Madeline.
Oscar and Maggie show off the newest member of our family. Essey is a heeler/hound mix rescued from Missouri, where many of the local rescue organizations find dogs about to be killed and have volunteers drive them to Minnesota to find homes. For more information, or to donate or inquire about rescuing an animal, please visit http://www.ruffstartrescue.org.
You can count on Javier and Mariana to keep a watch over this corner of the Powderhorn neighborhood. Always playing and keeping in-touch with their neighbors, they are consistently the first kids to put the rubber to the sidewalk, after the melt. And hey! It's Javier's birthday! He just turned 9 years old! Happy Birthday Javier!!!
It is a project of the LGBT CHAT (Citizen Health Action Team) geared towards empowering LGBTQ Health in the Backyard communities of South Minneapolis. The LGBT CHAT is part of the Backyard Initiative through the Cultural Wellness Center and Allina.
They have been going throughout the summer, starting at 6:30 pm. Zumba resumes after a Labor Day break. It will be held every Monday through Sept outside in the park and will move into the Powderhorn Park pavilion through Dec. 31st.
Playing in the park on a perfect day of weather and no mosquitoes, just before the dinner hour, these children had just met my dog Ziggy and were very friendly. The girl's grandparents live in the neighborhood.
Longing for Light; Buscando la Luz
Light is hard to come by in the north on the winter solstice. Hard to believe this is officially the first day of winter! We turn indoors for warmth of heart and home.
La luz es difícil de encontrar en el norte en el solsticio del invierno. Es difícil creer que este es oficialmente el primer día del invierno! Hay que buscar dentro de la casa para el calor del corazón y de la familia.
"Solstice Stilt-N-Spin Youth Summer Camp"
This morning, Bart Buch (back row, arm raised) was teaching stilt walking to children ages 9 to 13 in Powderhorn Park. Bart is a local puppeteer and stilt-walking expert, and he was assisted today by Eben Kowler (left). (Program by In the Heart of the Beast Puppet & Mask Theatre, Minneapolis; see http://www.hobt.org.
It's got three layers of shiny sparkles and a jacket that can come on and off. The shorts underneath didn't come with the dress though.
This was the bus stop talk this morning as Frances and Luca waited for their school bus to whisk them from 14th Ave at 32nd St for yet another amazing day of South Side Family School (not quite in the P-Horn, but still super cool and a favorite to many P-Horners).
Good neighbors and friends hanging out on a gorgeous Spring day. Alex is a Community Activist and avid Gardener and Kristen is a Printmaker making her living as a painter of the interiors and exteriors of homes. I've seen her painting work and it is very good.

Xuan (back of sled) and her friend Jonah were lucky enough to hitch a ride home from her mom after sledding in Powderhorn Park this afternoon. Let's hope they had something hot to drink upon arriving home, because the temperature was dropping.
