I chanced upon this scene today, and I had a good time meeting people and looking at their wares. Anthony Shane Florist and Flamingos are located in Powderhorn neighborhood in Minneapolis. Anthony Shane bought the building and moved his shop of 16 years from 19th and Nicollet in November 2009. New address: 3404 Cedar Avenue South, Minneapolis. Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. For more information: www.anthonyshaneflorist.com or call 612.871.9388.
Flamingos is open once a month for occasional sales by several vendors (including Linda and Tim, pictured here), and it’s happening this Wednesday through Sunday, September 8 through 12, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. I saw all kinds of vintage furniture on the sidewalk in front of the stores. I had to see what was happening. The first floor and basement are full of all sorts of collectible and antique dishes, lamps, furniture, artwork, knickknacks, old photos, books, and other items. Many of the vendors are local. It’s a welcoming environment and full of what are called “divine finds.” For future sales dates, www.flamingosdivinefinds.com or call 612.767.4548.

This statue stands amid late summer blooms in a garden in Powderhorn neighborhood in Minneapolis. I decided to feature this statue even though photos of it appeared previously in Powderhorn365.com (on 8/30/09 by Mel Boone and on 1/4/10 by Stephanie Wilbur Ash). There is something compelling about the lushness and soft look of the flowers juxtaposed with the stone statue holding a clay pot while in front of the brick building in shadow.

These two bikes are chained to a tree in Powderhorn Park. It is a living thing, not a metal pole. This can damage the bark of the tree and make it vulnerable to disease and death. Consider this: Years ago, a friend parked his bike by locking it to a young tree on our boulevard. When he returned, the bike was still there, but the top of the tree had been sawed off. The thieves must have left in a hurry and couldn't grab the bike. However, there was no hope for the tree. Be kind to trees, please.
