These three women, from Conservation Corps (http://www.conservationcorps.org), are installing one of 100 rain gardens in the neighborhood in an effort to improve water quality in Powderhorn Lake. Also, click the "photo pool" at right to see pictures of a car fire on 14th Avenue about 12:45am Wednesday. The car was completely gutted by fire in the middle of the street, and an ambulance was seen leaving the scene, but no witnesses came forward when the fire investigator asked if anyone had seen how it started.

Steven, foreman of the sewer upgrade project at 35th and Chicago, kindly explained it to me. In short, it's one of the last projects to replace the city's aging sewers such that waste goes to the treatment plant rather than directly into the river. Another worker gave us the names of the track backhoe and the tractor backhoe, two machines which greatly fascinated my toddler "assistant." See more photos of the jobsite in the "Powderhorn 365 Pool" at right.
Andrew (left) said he is facing the loss of his home due to recently having lost the job he has worked for 20 years and owing many thousands of dollars to the city in fines levied by the inspection division. He worries about where he will go, not wanting to take his three children to a shelter.

On Chicago and 38th, people wait
They wait for the gas tank to top off,
for the bus to rumble up, doors opening swish hiss,
for the light to change along with their luck.
They wait to cross the street, as if the other side is any different,
and for the call to lay down their prayer rugs and face
a city a world away from this Midwestern town.
They wait for customers to step through the door,
for lost souls to find their way
to the right side of the theological debate.
They wait for the check to come,
for the numbers on the lottery ticket
to finally line up in the right order.
They wait for the food shelf to open,
for hair to be braided, buzzed, snipped, and clipped,
for the latest fashions to hit the racks.
They wait for Prince Charming,
for an easy score,
for something other to do than wait.
They wait for the rain to stop,
the snow to be shoveled,
the day's heat to give way to evening's cool grace.
They wait to be grown up, adolescents
jangly with hormones and glimpses of the future,
and for this tired life to finally peter out.
They wait to lay their head on the table, foreclosure notice in hand,
for the shiny proud key to their first apartment,
for a shelter from every kind of storm.
They wait to break a heart, to seal a deal,
to damage property, to repair
a wrecked car, to be served a meal.
On the corner of Chicago and 38th, the people wait.

I found these five young men building their watercraft for the Aquatennial milk carton boat race this Sunday on Lake Calhoun (aquatennial.org/events.php?mode=detailEvent&EventID=408). Their boat's theme this year is Shrek (you can see the outline of his head behind them). Good luck and hope you bring back a win for Powderhorn like last year!
