I found these three siblings sitting with their mother (not pictured) in front of the Division of Indian Works on Lake Street. They are descendants of the original inhabitants of this land that so many of us now call home. As of the 2000 Census, Powderhorn had almost 500 residents who considered themselves to be in the category "Native American or Alaskan Native alone," as well as many people of mixed heritage. Minneapolis has one of the highest percentages of urban Native Americans in the nation, and much of that is concentrated in the Phillips and Powderhorn neighborhoods.

This morning, Bart Buch (back row, arm raised) was teaching stilt walking to children ages 9 to 13 in Powderhorn Park. Bart is a local puppeteer and stilt-walking expert, and he was assisted today by Eben Kowler (left). (Program by In the Heart of the Beast Puppet & Mask Theatre, Minneapolis; see www.hobt.org. For more of my photos of this event, see powderhorn365 and my Flickr photostreams.)
