Full Cycle held its third Neighborhood Day yesterday where they opened up their classroom at 821 E. 35th Street to give back to the neighborhood by fixing any kid's bike for free.
I had a great time getting to know Jordon, the intern working on my daughter's bike, while he replaced her brake cables and tried to figure out why the back calipers weren't working correctly.
Jordon is going into his last year of highschool and is expecting his first child in a week. He told me that last year he was shot twice in the leg, just walking home late at night in the wrong place at the wrong time, and decided that it was time to change the trajectory of his life. Becoming an intern at Full Cycle was his very first time as an employee. Now he works two other jobs in addition to his internship...as a part-time care assistant and he was just hired as a cook at Burger King (beating out several other applicants for the position). After highschool he plans on completing his certification to become a Certified Nurse Assistant.
Full Cycle provides an amazing opportunity for many kids just like Jordon who are learning skills to carry with them into the workforce, whether they end up working in the biking industry or just are training to become great employees in whichever field they choose.
